Vehicle checks: what to do before setting off

Setting off on holiday often means long journeys, packed cars and traffic conditions that can sometimes be more challenging. Before setting off, there are a few preventative measures you can take to reduce the risks and ensure a smoother journey.

The first step is to make sure you have the vehicle’s official documents with you, in particular the vehicle registration document. It is also a good idea to save your breakdown service’s number in your mobile phone in advance. In the event of a breakdown or an accident, every minute saved can make all the difference.

Mandatory safety equipment must be carried in the vehicle: a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle.

A few technical checks are also recommended before setting off. Pay particular attention to the condition of the tyres and the levels of engine oil, coolant, windscreen washer fluid and brake fluid. If you have any doubts about any of these, it is best to have your vehicle checked by a professional before setting off.
