Neighbour disputes: the right approach to defuse a conflict

55 per cent of French people feel they have problems – whether frequent or occasional – with their neighbours*. Noise, issues relating to shared walls, and the use of communal areas: these everyday situations can quickly escalate. However, a few simple steps can help defuse a conflict before it takes hold.

The first step is to ensure compliance with the rules governing the co-ownership or housing estate, which regulate communal life and are often the basis for disputes.

In the event of a dispute, it is advisable to communicate calmly and constructively.

If the dispute persists, the next step is to send a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt, setting out the facts in a factual manner. If this written approach proves unsuccessful, it is possible to involve a mediator.

If the dispute escalates, local authorities, such as the police or the local council, may be called upon.

Finally, if you are unsure about your rights, it is always a good idea to seek advice. Remember to check your insurance policies to see what legal assistance cover you have. Our teams of legal experts are here to provide you with information, advice and guidance on how to resolve this sort of situation.
